Yesterday, the IRS announced that the tax filing season will be delayed as a result of the government shutdown. The filing season, meaning the time when the IRS begins accepting 2013 returns, was set to begin on January 21st. It will now be delayed until January 28th or February 4th. Delayed filing seasons happen too frequently. They often result in compressed tax filing seasons, additional stress, and delays in refunds for that subset of clients that like to file early and receive refunds.
