Our firm, along with other CPAs across the state, participated in the 2013 NCACPA Day of Service.  We volunteered (along with several other local CPAs) at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina on Friday, September 20th. When we arrived the Volunteer Coordinator, Donna Bey, gave us a tour of the Food Bank and explained all the wonderful things they are doing for the community.  She explained the Wilmington branch distributes almost double what a normal distribution center of their size should be able to. This would not be possible without their committed regular volunteers as well as special group events like NCACPA Day of Service.

The Food Bank does not distribute the food directly to individuals.  Instead, other organizations obtain the food from the Food Bank and distribute to the public.  We also learned that with the downturn in the economy, many working families have turned to organizations to meet their basic food needs.

Throughout the morning we sorted 6 large pallets of food into boxes so that the Food Bank's partner organizations could easily find what they needed when they come shopping. Like Donna told us, everyone quickly found their role whether it was quality control checking the food, organizing it into boxes, labeling or stacking the completed boxes. The 6 pallets turned into countless boxes of food to be distributed to those in need. While we were there Adam was interviewed by WWAY News Channel 3 and featured on the news that evening promoting the CPA day of service and the Food Bank.

We had a lot of fun and hope to make it a regular event in our office! If you are interested in volunteering or want to learn more, contact the Food Bank.
